When watching a horror movie, a scene which contains flickering lights is often a good indicator that a frightful scare is right around the corner. However, when you see flickering lights occur in your home, the reason behind it is often more logical and less supernatural. If you notice flickering lights at home regularly throughout the week, then it is time to contact your local electrician to see if a home electrical rewiring project is required. Here are two common reasons why your lights are not behaving as they should.

Voltage Draw

There are two main common reasons why a house light flickers, and the first is traced back to instances when an appliance is turned on. For example, if you switch on your oven and you notice flickering lights in that area of your home, then your oven is drawing so much electrical current into this area that the voltage rate is dropping elsewhere. This causes other electrical items, such as your lights, to not receive the amount of electricity they need to function correctly. An electrician tests the voltage of the wiring at the socket your oven is plugged into and replaces the wiring in this area if it is the cause of the issue.

Damaged Wiring

The second common cause of flickering lights is damaged wiring within the walls or ceiling cavities of your home. This may be caused by the age of the property, or the wires have become damaged by rodents or other pests who chew on wires as they move around your home. The cause of the damaged wiring dictates the extent of the home electrical rewiring project. If it is only a small damaged portion, then only that part of the wiring needs to be replaced. However, if the damaged wiring relates to the age of the home, then a full electrical rewiring project is recommended.

Regular flickering lights must be investigated by your local electrician because damaged wiring and large voltage draws are both a fire hazard. If left unchecked, either of these issues may lead to a fire happening at home. Therefore, give your general electrician a call and get them to run a diagnostic of what is happening to the wiring of your home so that you can get a qualified opinion of the best way to rectify the problem. If it does turn out that your home needs electrical rewiring work, then at least you have peace of mind knowing nothing spooky is behind your flickering house lights.
